APPRAISER PROFILE

JOHN D HARPER   AACI, PAg, SR/WA, CES

John Harper started his real estate career in 1977 in Calgary as a farm and ranch realtor. In 1978 John filled the role of an assistant commercial appraiser - undertaking to collect and analyze data, conduct market analysis and assist a senior commercial appraiser. During the period of 1978 to 1984 John gained valuable market exposure through real estate appraisal activities, and undertook to complete Appraisal Institute coursework to satisfy the Appraisal Institute of Canada’s educational requirements. In 1984 John joined CMHC, where he gained experience in the appraisal of multi-family residential properties. After attaining the AACI designation in 1986 John formed his own real estate appraisal company - Harper & Co. Inc. During the period of 1986 through 1990 Mr. Harper employed three contract appraisers and support staff to undertake appraisals on a variety of properties in Southern Alberta. In 1990 John Harper sold his appraisal practice and joined NOVA Corporation. As a senior appraiser with NOVA Corporation John undertook a wide variety of agricultural related appraisal assignments. Valuable experience and accreditation was acquired in the area of Right-of-Way. John attained the senior Right-of-Way designation in 1994 (SR/WA) from the International Right of Way Association. During this period of employment with NOVA John gained valuable experience in land administration, and the appraisal/acquisition of Rights-Of-Way. In 1995 John Harper moved the Salmon Arm to embark on a diverse career (appraisal, right-of-way, environmental site assessment) in a private practice.

  • 1977- 1983 -> Fee appraisal, real estate sales.

  • 1983-1985 -> Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. - Real estate appraisal multi-family housing.

  • 1986 - 1990 -> Owned and operated a private real estate appraisal practice, Calgary Alberta (Managed, directed and mentored three associate appraisers, support staff).

  • 1990 - 1996 -> NOVA Corporation, Calgary Alberta. (real estate appraisal, right-of-way acquisition). Assessment of Annual Payment Program - compensation to landowners for pipeline right-of-way (3+ million dollar payments to landowners/year).

  • 1996 - Trickle Creek Land Services. Established January 1996 in Salmon Arm BC. Full real property services.

  • 2000 - Company name change -Trickle Creek Land Services to Shuswap Land Services.

 EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

  • A senior member in the International Right-of-way Association (SR/WA) in 1993. A 4 year educational and experience program.

  • Granted the use of the AACI designation in 1986 (a senior member in the appraisal institute of Canada). A 6 year educational and experience program.

  • Bachelor of Science - Environmental Science, at Cornell University (1972 through 1976).

  • Real estate sales licensing and agents licensing courses, agricultural land analysis coursework, environmental site assessment seminars and educational certification requirements.

  • Continuing re-certification educational requirements for the AIC and IRWA
